Harahan— Coyote concerns draw a crowd in Harahan as neighbors look for way to keep them from creeping near their homes.

The Louisiana Wildlife Rehabilitators Association is teamed with the Humane Society of the United States putting on a meeting to teach ways to co-exist with coyotes and make neighborhoods less attractive.
“We will be here training their Animal Control officers in ways to co-exist with these animals and on teaching residents hazing,” says a representative.
They say research from a coyote problem in Denver scientifically proves people can co-exist.
Harahan’s Police Chief Mac Dickinson says they will continue to shoot coyotes on night missions as long as they remain a public safety hazard.

Still the debate continued at the meeting, kill or co-exists?
Ralph Herrmann says shooting coyotes is fine by him, “Hazing may be something that works under some situations.  Today we need an immediate response.  We have to eradicate them as a predator.”
Diane Pittman says she feels differently, “I do not believe in killing these animals. We lived with them in Colorado and they lived with us with out any problems, except for people who let their animals run wild especially at night.”

This was the first of several meetings across South Louisiana concerning coyote co-existence, which will happen over the next few weeks.
